First of all, for those of you who have been looking for this in last Friday's K-Newsie but could not find it..(oops haha) Here is the direct youtube linky to last year's 'Making Dances' workshop.

As a bonus.. I'd like to share with you the main takeaway (if any!) from re-visiting that class.

Making time for self-care is an often overlooked (and - sadly - counter-intuitive for most of us these days) time-and-sanity saver.

Especially for anyone working in the arts.

It is crucial.

Why so?

Because.. without it - it is very hard to find/keep the following.. especially in the long term:

moving injury-free (and/or with less pain than usual)
staying healthy (or at least.. becoming as healthy as possible)
maintaining a sense of balance (mentally and physically)
feeling truly confident (trauma, tension, posture, emotions.. it's all connected)
re-sourcing inspiration (the muse - bless her heart - can be a fickle beast)

It is hard enough to enjoy life 'as it is'..

And certainly not easier without any of the above, right?

So. What is it that you CAN do about this?

Prioritizing.. or at least BALANCING.. quality recovery time for yourself.

How? In the form of.. well, the basics, basically.

Proper nutrition, regular hydration, daily input-breaks, sufficient sleep (naps!), time in nature, 'safe people', and.. something that everyone should give themselves REGULARLY (I'm looking at you.. self).. regular sessions of gentle stretching combined with breathing and soft, full body movement.

Ok..Why does that work so well? What does it DO?

Somatic movement helps to (re-)regulate your nervous system and release tension that gets 'stuck' in your body - especially after times of stress.

This residual tension can influence your hormonal balance, your immune system, your metabolism, your mood, your biochemistry... and everything else that is connected to it.

In short.. if you take care of yourself from the INSIDE OUT, it can literally help you live longer, and more well.

Seriously.

Ok, it is THAT important.

Make yourself, your health, a priority. Your organs, your body, your mind, your soul (and er.. your pets & family members!) will thank you for it.

And I do, too. I care about you, boo.

So, yeah.

Where does this come from?

I've been diving into this topic (as you could read in the previous K-Newsies) for the past well.. uh, years.

Combined with my experiments with gentle stretches, mindfulness, somatic movement and breath work, Chinese medicine, Qi Gong and Taiji (*) I figured.. Ok, perhaps I CAN help/contribute here in some way.

(* motivated by finding ways to improve my own health.. but also - I'll admit - pure geekery.. and curiousity)

This is how I came up with the Flexi-BOOST workshop idea.

I wanted to share the ways in which I have been taking care of my own health most recently, in the shape of a series of quick, easy-to-follow, mini at-home movement and stretching routines.

It was originally something I wanted to share with my current online students (hi, BOOSTies!)

But then I figured I could make it easily accessible to other dancers too, who are not actively studying with me yet(!), if I shared it.. in the form of an online workshop.

Makes sense in a way.. Right? :)
