Hello there, you. Thank you for reading this K-Newsie!
As the Theme for my upcoming Strength - Flexibility - Dance BOOST Series in 2023 will be PROPS, I've put together a special 3-Part 'Props Tips' K-Newsie Series for you with my favorite Props Tips, Videos and Blog Posts.
Today - our final one of this mini-series - will be all about FAN VEILS (yeey!)
ENJOY!
Much much love,
xx Kim/Khalida (K-Zilla)
PS: Speaking of props - Check out a NEW free Bonus FB Live Session for you HERE!
Let's get you started right away - 6 Tips for Dancing with Fan Veils:
IRON your silks.Yup. Trust me on this. It makes EVERYTHING easier, and even the simplest fan veil sets will look (and feel) like a million dollars.
Cut (or rip!) your silk fan veils to length (or order them to size) You can work with them a. long (ie your own body length plus however high your hand can go up above your head, b. medium (chin to floor) or c. even shorter (chin to shins) - depending on the movements and music/mood. The longer the silks, the slower the moves.
Practice your GRIP. The basics matter. Ideally, you'll want to hold your fans in such a way that the staves stay open fully (180 degrees) at all times, while you are still relaxed enough to move your wrists and fingers freely.
Practice opening and closing your fans. This will give you more freedom and smoother movement transitions throughout your dances, AND as a bonus, it will help to 'break in' your fans so they will close/open more easily. (we will work on this at BOOST!)
Less is more. Yup, also for fan veils! Give your silks time (and space) to move for maximum impact, and don't forget you can use both the fans and the silk trails as beautiful (and highly effective) frames.
Remember to DANCE! Yees, even with fan veils. Feel free to experiment. Go slow, go fast, spin, frame, flutter. Add some level changes, or a peek-a-boo. Get creative!
Have fun with these!!
(Read on below for my Fan Veils Tips blog post and video inspiration!)
Inspiration: My favourite Fan Veil Dances:
Butterflies (last year's living room improvisation :))
Chiftitelli (charity solo with long fan veils for Dance4Children)
For the World (martial-arts inspired with fan veils & floor intro)
Springtime (performance for Bellydance Sparkles in Belgium)
Where to get fan veils:
Ginni.de (these are cheaper fan veil sets, but I love their lightness (and their length!)
Fireflow (gorgeously bright silks and sturdy fans, based in Sweden)
Flowsilkuk (LOVE her custom-made fan veils - etsy shop opens periodically)
-> Note: as I mentioned in the Fan Veils Tips, all of these fan veil sets will look (and feel!) much, much better if you IRON THEM (one session will do for a long time!)
If you are not sure where to begin, check out this Youtube clip where I iron a new set of fan veils together with you in 'real time' :)
